Creative Collage Online Preview Video by Ann Bell from Ann Bell on Vimeo.

Creative Collage Online contains over 4 hours of video instruction.
You will be closer than you could be in a classroom.
The camera is within 3 feet of my work.
You watch as I paint, as if you were looking through my eyes.
I explain what I am doing, step by step. And I explain why.
I share my thought processes as well as my painting techniques.

I am creating each piece as the camera records. I am deciding how I want it to look. I share my thought process, so you can understand why I make each choice. Sometimes I don’t like an effect. Then you get to see how I make a change, without stress & without spoiling what I’ve already done.

  • You will learn how to design/paint your background so it supports & works with you as you make your collage…and why this is important.
  • You will learn how to tear paper: how to keep the surface color on top, how to expose the interior for an additional design element, how to control the shape as you tear, how to tear a perfectly straight edge, without a ruler, & when you might want a cut edge.
  • You will lean how to choose the best adhesive to use, based on the weight of your item, so that it stays put, without discoloring or loosening.
  • You will learn my Perfect-Every-Time Collage Technique, so your paper elements lie flat and stay where you put them. If you want to wrinkle paper, for texture, you will learn how to control your wrinkles.
  • You’ll learn how to choose colors & mix colors to get any hue you want, and how to make the paint behave the way you want: flowing freely, staying put, thin veil or glaze, or completely cover, hide distracting pieces of an element with paint, while preserving its identity.
  • You will learn how to color elements that stand out from the rest because the color is wrong.
  • You’ll learn how to work in layers. It’s a lot of fun AND it adds a level of interest & sophistication to your work.
  • You’ll learn guidelines (NOT rules!) for composing your collage/painting. I’ll make it simple and easy, with a video where I show you how I decide where to put each item. Composition sounds mysterious, but it is simply the placement of individual items so that they work well together to keep the viewer’s eye captured inside the painting. I’ll show you how to use what you already know…but don’t realize that you know…and I’ll fill in the gaps in your understanding of composition.
  • You will learn how to make all of the elements fit together so that your finished collage is a real painting, NOT just a bunch of STUFF glued on a SURFACE. **This is a tricky challenge, even for  experienced artists. I’ll show you how to do it, simply and easily, so that you’ll understand how to do it. You’ll be able to do it, even if THIS is your FIRST class.
  • I show you 3 different integrations…3 different paintings…You can follow my thought processes AND how I adapt when an “accident” presents itself.
  • You’ll learn and understand how to finish your own pieces. Each one is different. Perhaps I could give you a formula, but that wouldn’t be any fun AND it wouldn’t be creative.
  • I will be showing you some painting techniques as I show you how to blend the collage elements into a finished work of art. For beginners, this means a LOT of extra painting knowledge that isn’t part of a typical collage class. You could take classes for a long time without learning these easy, but not well known, techniques.

You can use the PayPal “Pay Now” button below to join the creative fun.

I’ll be teaching you the same techniques that I teach in my studio. Since these videos are online, and you can watch them separately, when you wish and as often as you wish, I’m able to teach in more detail than I can in a 1 day studio class. In my studio, I have to limit my instruction & demo to 1 hour…time is limited & everyone is eager to get started painting. In this class you’ll receive over 4 hours of expert instruction on video. Most art instruction DVDs contain less than 2 hours of instruction.

You will be able to watch the videos on Vimeo, as many times as you want to watch them. I’ll protect them with a password. I’ll send you the links and the password.   You’ll be able to watch them for at least 6 months after the class ends.  You will NOT be able to download them.

You are on your honor NOT TO SHARE the links or password with anyone else. The only exception to this is that other FAMILY members living in your home with you can watch the videos. If you are a parent, home schooling your children, this class can provide art instruction for both you and your children.

If you are able to watch videos on Vimeo or YouTube, you will be able to watch these. There will be NO Refunds once I have sent the pdf document.
BONUS: Sign up now, and I’ll send you a free package of vintage papers from my studio.

Suggested Supply List: Basically, you can use any acrylics you have plus drawing supplies. Read through the description below for ideas.
We’ll be using acrylic paint, your choice of colors. Primary colors red, yellow, blue plus white are a good basic selection.  Artist quality works better than student grade because it is more richly pigmented, but you can use what you have.

Acrylic medium is our adhesive of choice. It is clear. Can also be used to extend paint and for final coat.
Matte or gloss.

Acrylic Glazing Medium (optional) keeps your paint wet longer if you are doing any stamping.

Round and flat brushes. Your choice. Probably small and large of each.

Paper (heavy enough to take wet paint), canvas, canvas board, or masonite panels (gessoed) for painting surface. I use student grade watercolor paper for demonstrations and in my studio classes.

Vintage or interesting papers, or magazines, scrap card board, miscellaneous interesting semi-flat or lightweight objects, discarded dictionaries, maps, etc.

Collage is a great way to make personal art out of things that would otherwise be discarded.

I’m more interested in helping you develop your creativity and in showing you ways to make art than I am in specific supplies. For this reason, I don’t give a supply list. I use papers, colors & images that inspire me. You can paint along using your own selections and following my processes…or you can watch and then create.

If you love to create, and have been using paint, you probably have everything you need.

I encourage you to watch the videos. If you decide you need something, you can purchase it.

Don’t let the potential expense keep you away if the class is calling to you.

SINCE this class is ONLINE, I will not be providing supplies.
The lessons for this class will come to you at the beginning in a pdf document you can work through at your own speed. The individual videos will open from within the document.

I’ll show you some of the different kinds of papers & other items I use in my collages. This will give you an idea of the types of items you can use. As you go through your treasures, things you saved because they were too pretty or too interesting to discard, & your junk, you’ll gather items for your own projects.

The video clip above is a small piece of the video I made to share my excitement about collage & mixed media. You’ll receive the entire video as part of your first lesson.

I’ll teach you how to tear paper.

You’ll learn my perfect-every-time collage technique. I’ll send you instructions you can download & print and I’ll demonstrate each step. And I’ll demonstrate each step in a separate short video.

I’ll explain how to place your collage elements so the viewer is enticed to keep enjoying your collage.

I’ll teach you how to make all the elements look like they belong together, even if colors don’t match.

One lesson will show easy, creative ways to apply paint for texture.

You’ll learn how to use paint to transform the raw collage from “stuff glued on a surface” into a real painting.

You’ll learn how to audition or “try out” changes without altering what you already have. If you don’t like a change, you can try a different path.

You will watch as I create a collage painting step by step, from painting the background including mixing the color, to choosing the elements and placing them, through blending discordant pieces and transforming the raw collage into a finished painting.

You’ll watch as I take another piece from the stuff-glued-on stage through the finishing touches.

You’ll see that each piece is different. You’ll begin to understand how to use the techniques you’ve learn in different ways, according to how you want your finised painting to look.

When we come to the end of the course, you’ll realize that we have not done any drawing. If you cannot draw, don’t let that prevent you from making art.

You will be able to watch the videos online on Vimeo. They are password protected. Each lesson gives you the password you need and links to individual videos. The password is the same for most of the videos, but it is right there in the lesson so you don’t have to go searching for it.

As you go through the class, I will be happy to respond to your questions about materials and techniques. This means you must be able to send and receive email.
I will not be able to help you with computer issues. If you can watch videos on YouTube or Vimeo, you’ll be able to watch these class videos.

If a video seems slow, stop the play so the video can load into your computer’s memory. Then start the play again. If you can watch any online videos, you will be able to watch the ones for this class. There are no refunds.
People who have dial-up internet have told me that they can watch Vimeo videos by starting the play and then stopping it to let the video load and THEN playing it.
